A new presentation will explore the life and legacy of Mickey Gil, a key figure in New Orleans’ gay Carnival scene from the 1980s through the early 2000s.
The talk is scheduled for 6 to 7 p.m. June 11, 2026, at the Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience and online. The museum is located at 818 Howard Ave. in New Orleans.
Gil, a gay Jewish immigrant, came to New Orleans in 1982 after living in Vienna and Manhattan. He became known for his elaborate costumes, sharp wit and stage presence. Friends and collaborators also remembered his thick Israeli accent, shaped in part by Viennese German.
