Sukkah On The Roof

Get ready for a week packed with Sukkot events for all ages in our rooftop Sukkah, including an art installation by local artist Hannah Chalew!

Friday, September 25th - 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM: Member Exclusive Shabbat Sips in the Sukkah

Every year, we build a Sukkah on the roof, transforming our museum's rooftop into a gathering space for Southern hospitality—and we want to extend that hospitality to our members first. On the first night of Sukkot, you're invited to join us for an evening of Shabbat and Sukkot shmoozing and drinks, overlooking downtown New Orleans.

Our 2026 Sukkah will feature a specially-commissioned art installation from New Orleans artist Hannah Chalew.

All MSJE members are welcome at Shabbat Sips in the Sukkah, and are encouraged to join our full array of Sukkot events. To register for Sips in the Sukkah, email membership manager Cindy Smith at cindy@msje.org.

Monday, September 28th - Friday, October 2nd: Lunch and Lounge - 11:30AM -1:30PM

MSJE is located in a busy area of downtown New Orleans, surrounded by offices, hotels, restaurants, and apartment buildings. If you work or live in this area, take a midday break to enjoy lunch on our rooftop. You bring lunch; we provide light snacks and a perfect spot for relaxation.

Wednesday, September 30th - 5:30 PM: Louisiana Lulav Workshop with Hannah Chalew

In this hands-on session, participants will construct lulavim sourced from our Southern Louisiana ecology, reimagining a traditional ritual object through a distinctly regional lens. The session will begin with an artist walk-through of the Sukkah, during which Hannah Chalew will explain her approach to its creation and how a local DIY lulav fits into the installation's ethos. Chalew will discuss what traditional three species are used in the lulav and what plants can be used as regional substitutes. Participants will assemble the species and make a palm-leaf lulav ring to tie it all together. If there’s time, Chalew will also teach how to make paper chains from palm leaves to adorn the Sukkah further.

Spots are limited. Click here to register for the Louisiana Lulav Workshop.

Thursday, October 1st - 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM: Young Adult Happy Hour

Join the Young Adults at Shir Chadash (YAS) and JNOLA for a young adult happy hour in the sukkah.

Participants get two free drinks and unlimited snacks. Board games will be available.
